What is a Human Powered Submarine Team?

A Human-Powered Submarine Team comprises a group of aspiring young engineers driven by a passion for ocean exploration and a commitment to honing their engineering expertise. This team offers a unique blend of sport and education, allowing students to immerse themselves in a design journey deeply rooted in theoretical principles, culminating in the creation and operation of a human-powered submarine.
The race submarines are not designed as pressure vessels; instead, participants rely on Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus (SCUBA) for breathing. Teams must grapple with challenges such as managing free-flooding, achieving proper buoyancy, addressing weight considerations, and developing innovative propulsion systems

What is ISR?

The inaugural International Submarine Races (ISR) made their debut in West Palm Beach, FL, back in 1989. ISR was conceived with the primary aim of providing a platform for students to showcase their accomplishments in the fields of marine technology and ocean engineering. In its most recent edition, ISR hosted its 17th race at the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) during the summer, spanning from June 25th to June 30th, 2023. These weeklong competitions draw participants from universities and high schools across North and South America, Europe, and the Middle East. Enthusiastically, they eagerly anticipate the opportunity to witness their achievements shine in the design and operation of human-powered submarines.

What is eISR?

The European International Submarine Races (eISR) were inaugurated in 2012 as a biennial competition. The event takes place at Qinetiq, a prestigious location that was once the Royal Navy’s testing facility at Haslar, Gosport, situated within a spacious basin. This competition has provided Human-Powered Submarine Teams with a unique opportunity to concentrate on advancing their submarine hull designs every two years. In order to compete, teams must qualify by meeting certain standards and timelines. There are only 12 spots available for teams around the world to participate.
