ABOUT US
Our history
The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) was founded in Los Angeles, California, in 1974 by a group of engineers employed by the city of Los Angeles.
The objective was to form a national organization of professional engineers to serve as role models in the Hispanic community. The concept of networking was the key basis for the organization. SHPE quickly established two student chapters to begin the network that would grow to encompass the nation as well as reach countries outside the United States. Today, SHPE enjoys a strong but independent network of professional and student chapters throughout the nation.
Our story
The Florida Atlantic University chapter of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers was originally founded in August 1997 by Manuel Borge.
After a period of growth and decline, a new wave of students revamped the chapter in 2005, and has since seen large growth, especially over the past few years. This year marks the chapters 20th anniversary, and although the chapter was not active for all 20 years, it has grown to over 100 members strong, with many members enjoying the benefits of being a part of the SHPE Familia at large, including mentorships, internships, traveling, networking, and having fun with other brilliantly minded people. As we push on towards greater success, we will continue to pass on the torch as leaders in the STEM community by empowering our youth, encouraging our students, and honoring the professionals that paved the way before us.
